Friend Public Schools - Addition and Renovation

This 63,000-square-foot addition provided a new performance gym, media center and commons area to serve the school’s elementary, middle and high school grades. The new amenities were centrally located to provide convenient access for all grades, promote efficient circulation, and preserve natural light into the older buildings.

The project also added locker rooms, a wrestling area, an ADA-compliant elevator, an industrial arts classroom and workroom, and other classrooms. A new media center features computer-friendly lighting and natural light, and was designed with flexibility to accommodate future technology needs.

Patrons placed a high priority on having a top-entry, sunken performance gym. This was a challenge for the flat site. We carefully designed the fire egress to allow 1,100 spectators to exit quickly. Pumps will move wastewater upward from below-grade locker rooms. A brick appearance was also important to patrons. We used thin bricks, inset into precast insulated concrete panels, for their cost-effectiveness, speed of construction, and durability.
