Historic Haymarket 8th Street Streetscape

The Clark Enersen Partners designed streetscape improvements for a four-block section of Eighth Street, the main thoroughfare through Lincoln’s Historic Haymarket District. Working with several city departments, we conducted numerous public meetings to gather input regarding the design.

We developed a design concept based on the community’s desire to maintain the urban “honesty” and “grittiness” observed in the district, which grew from a turn-of-the century industrial area with factories and warehouses into a vibrant retail and entertainment district. As such, the project sought to reinforce the existing character of the area.

New streetscape components were designed to blend in with the environment or highlight existing features. Improvements included dramatically widening the sidewalks, creating brick corner nodes and brick pedestrian crossings, and installing ornamental lighting, new benches, and street-side plantings. These changes made the district friendlier to pedestrians while strengthening its historic character.
