Peru State College Old Gym-New Library Transformation

Peru State College was faced with the dilemma of needing a new library, but was limited by a state moratorium on adding new square footage to the campus. In response, The Clark Enersen Partners worked closely with the college to identify possible solutions. After analysis, we determined that an under-utilized gymnasium was a suitable fit.

The gym floor was renovated to accommodate high traffic library functions — current periodicals, reference collection, technology, and the circulation desk and offices. Roofed enclosures reduce the volume of the large space, creating “buildings within buildings.” Reference services are located below a series of cherrywood fins that draw attention to this key area. We also renovated an adjacent building to serve as an academic resource center.

The project was featured in American Libraries magazine for its innovative reuse of an existing building.
