SDSU - Avera Health & Science Center

This facility houses South Dakota State University's College of Pharmacy and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Prominently located near SDSU’s classically-styled Administration Building, its design incorporates modern materials, coupled with classical forms and proportions, to reflect the high-tech nature of the work inside while respecting the campus context. The complex provides 145,600 square feet of modern instructional and research lab and support space.

The existing 48,600-square-foot Chemistry building was renovated to house secured research areas, while a 97,000-square-foot addition was created to house instructional Chemistry and Pharmacy classrooms and labs, as well as faculty office space and additional research areas. The transition area at the intersection of old and new provided an opportunity to provide interactive student spaces with inspiring views of the Campus Green and Campanile.

To ensure continual operation over the three-year construction schedule, the existing building was renovated in phases. The renovation included a complete upgrade of the fume exhaust system, a new heat recovery system, the doubling of air handling system capacity, a new electrical service entrance and distribution systems, and major modifications to the campus electrical system.

This project also included the construction of a new Chiller Plant building to accommodate a full-buildout capacity of 3150 cooling tons. This plant will eventually serve approximately 20 buildings.
