Doane University - Learning Commons

The Learning Commons merges technology with creative, collaborative and instructional spaces inside the Perkins Library on the Doane University Campus.

The upper level of the existing library, which once housed the majority of collection, has been transformed into a new, open and flexible Learning Commons.  This area features several collaborative and individual study seating areas as well as a 24/7 study area, accessible to students around the clock.  Classroom space, study rooms, a media lab with recording studio and a help desk are new additions to the floor.  A Writing Center was also relocated here to encourage use by students “popping in” for assistance.

The main entrance, formerly on the lower level, was relocated to the upper floor, along with the main service point and staff workspace.  The Rall Art Gallery, previously within the lower level library, now resides on the upper floor in a larger stand-alone capacity, , accessible from the public space as well as the Learning Commons.

The lower level was reconfigured to hold the majority of collection materials, with new compact storage to manage the capacity. New quiet study rooms were added to this level, as well as a large conference space, gallery storage and workspace, and an Archivist office.

A new elevator and stair within the common space outside the Learning Commons was provided to address accessibility and life-safety issues within the existing building.
