Lowell Berg Celebrates 50-Years with Clark & Enersen

Lowell began his professional career in 1975 at Clark & Enersen, Hamersky, Schlaebitz, Burroughs and Thomsen. He began his tenure at the firm as a designer under the guidance of the firm’s founders and Harvard graduates K.B. Clark and Larry Enersen, and Director of Design Albert Hamersky. Lowell’s talent and leadership abilities allowed him to rise to Senior Principal and Board member and eventually President in 1989. His vision and leadership as President transformed the firm and positioned it for unprecedented growth and excellence in design. Lowell led the effort to re-establish engineering disciplines in the firm in 1993 after a 15-year absence of mechanical, electrical and structural engineering services. This fulfilled his vision for the firm to provide a holistic approach to design. During Lowell’s presidency, the firm also opened additional offices in Nebraska, Missouri & Kansas.

Lowell’s immediate influence on designers and design excellence at Clark & Enersen was primarily focused on libraries, corporate office buildings, and government buildings. His design expertise in these building types led to the firm’s participation in projects that include the Farm Credit Services of America Corporate Headquarters, Assurity Center, Lincoln Benefit Life Allstate Corporate Office, Bess Dodson Walt Branch Library, Loren Cory Eiseley Branch Library, Seward Memorial Library, Hastings Memorial Library, and numerous others.

Along with his work at the firm, Lowell continues to be heavily involved in serving the community. He has dedicated his personal time to both public, private, and philanthropic organizations in Nebraska and nationwide including as a member and former president of the Rotary Club #14; a past Congregation Moderator, past Chair of the Board of Trustees, and current member of the Facilities Committee at First Plymouth Church; as well as past president of the Lincoln City Libraries Board of Trustees and the Lincoln Community Playhouse Board.

Lowell spent his career heavily involved with the American Institute of Architects at both the State and National level. This included serving as the AIA Nebraska president as well as serving as a member of the AIA Nebraska Government Affairs Committee, AIA State Government Network, and the AIA National Committee on Design. Lowell also led efforts to defeat legislation that would have placed a tax on fees for professional services and has continually championed legislation that maintained the integrity of the profession.

In 2020, Lowell was awarded the Harry F. Cunningham Gold Medal for Architectural Excellence in the State of Nebraska. The Gold Medal is the highest honor the Nebraska Chapter of the American Institute of Architects can bestow and is awarded in recognition of the most distinguished achievement in architecture or service to the profession of architecture in the State.
