City of Falls City, Library and Arts Center

Clark & Enersen was selected to design the 15,000-square-foot Falls City Library and Art Center. The design concept for the facility was based on a painting, by Falls City native Jon Falter, which appeared on the December 1946 cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Similar to the buildings in the painting, the new library features a simple facade and modular shape of the “International Style” of the 1940’s. The design serves as a metaphor for the progress and civic pride instilled by the new library.

Functionally, the library features an open floor plan to enhance staff efficiency and user friendliness. “Story Time” was the inspiration behind the design of the children’s area. A big blue circle on the floor serves as the main organizing element. As every story and every child is unique, circles of different colors are used for individual or small group activities. In order to enhance security, monitoring and patron assistance, the Library Director’s work area is located near the circulation desk, and the staff work area is adjacent to the book drop and computer room.
