High Plains Library District, Kersey Branch Library Renovation

Clark & Enersen was selected to assist the High Plains Library District in designing a new home for the Kersey Branch Library in Kersey, Colorado. The existing library shared space with the local Senior Center and lacked the appropriate capacity to house ample collections, technology, or programming for the community. The library had already determined the new location for the library, a former municipal building, prior to the commencement of the project. This existing 3,000-square-foot structure required a complete interior renovation, updated infrastructure, and exterior updates to ensure envelope integrity. The prominent new location is adjacent to the city park, which provides new programming opportunities for the library.

Our approach involved a community engagement process to gather patron ideas and desires for the new space. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, engagement took place via online information gathering as well as physical survey distribution throughout the community. The results of this effort informed several aspects of the ongoing design, including access to expanded technology, gathering space, quiet reading zones, safe and robust children’s spaces, and additional program offerings.

The project provided the library with dedicated meeting and study rooms, expanded collection capacity, twice as many public computers, dedicated and separate spaces for Kids, Teens, and Adults with appropriate furnishings and amenities, and expanded staff workspace and resources.
