City of Lincoln, West Haymarket/Arena Redevelopment District Streetscape

City of Lincoln, West Haymarket/Arena Redevelopment District Streetscape

The redevelopment of the West Haymarket/Arena district consisted primarily of vacated railyard which was transformed with a new network of streets, pedestrian ways, parking structures, and mixed-use development. We designed a comprehensive streetscape plan to provide a cohesive look and feel throughout the area, from its streets and sidewalks to its green spaces and plazas.

The streetscape was integrated with the surrounding architecture—that of Lincoln’s Haymarket and the new mixed-use West Haymarket/Arena development—to supplement the character and authenticity of the area while also providing an exciting and entertaining atmosphere. We also designed active public spaces in the area for outdoor exhibits and festivals.

Canopy Street—named for the canopy that provided shelter for the historic district’s train station—provides a strong north-south circulation spine linking all retail spaces, parking, and the new Pinnacle Bank Arena. The street provides “mini-destinations” along its length, from N Street up to R Street and beyond into the festival space north of the arena. The design provides both energy and excitement while also bridging the transition from the historic Haymarket to the new West Haymarket/Arena District. An area midway along Canopy Street can serve as a small event space. Our design included lighting, benches, plantings, and decorative pavements.
