Kansas City Public Library, Southeast Branch Renovation

Kansas City Public Library, Southeast Branch Renovation

Clark & Enersen completed a renovation of the Kansas City Public Library Southeast Branch to address technology needs, maximize space usage, and establish a dedicated, multi-use teen area. The work was based on a facilities master plan developed by our team and KCPL stakeholders. The masterplan emphasized creating open and flexible spaces for patrons of all ages.

The renovation included:

  • Digital media lab with a “social” side for activities and gaming, “focused” side for quieter work, and a control room and audio recording booth for creating professional-grade music and videos.
  • Meeting rooms capable of accommodating groups of varying sizes.
  • Redesigned service desk to enable self-checkout and make staff more accessible.
  • Aesthetic enhancements, including accent walls, carpet, acoustics, and ceiling tiles.
  • Exterior updates, including brick tuckpointing, masonry cleaning, new flashing, and repainting all exterior steel.

The renovation involved creating an entirely new facility layout by rearranging the Kids and Teens sections, relocating collection areas, and changing from 90-inch to 66-inch shelving to improve sight lines throughout the building. Finishes and furnishings were also upgraded in those collection areas.
