University of Nebraska-Lincoln, College of Engineering Kiewit Hall

The Clark & Enersen and Ballinger design team was selected by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to design Kiewit Hall. The new, $115 million state-of-the-art engineering building is scheduled to open in 2023 and will serve as the College of Engineering’s academic hub. It will also house construction management programs. With the goal of increasing enrollment in the engineering college to around 5,000 students over the next ten years, the facility will help the university expand while also meeting future workforce needs in the state and region.

The new facility will feature a number of academic spaces and university support spaces, including classrooms, lecture rooms, small group meeting rooms, student study space, open study space, a commons area, a dining area, as well as office space, conference rooms, board rooms, interview rooms, and storage. Additionally, it will have a variety of dedicated laboratory spaces for:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering Measurements
  • Materials Science
  • Circuits & Electronics
  • Thermal Fluids
  • Fluid Dynamics
  • Visualization
  • VDC/BIM
  • Mechatronics/Power Electronics

Kiewit Hall will also include a 20,300 SF space called “The Garage.” This student design and collaborative makerspace will include a high bay lab, machine/welding shop, a teamwork area for large projects, wood shop, electric shop, 3D printing & laser cutting, wet lab, paint booth, and a display/even space.

The surrounding site will play a vital part in extending the programming of the College of Engineering out into the campus. It incorporates programming elements that support the adjacent residence hall and Student Life as well as the University as a whole through a variety of outdoor spaces that will provide areas for outdoor classrooms, club gatherings, recreation, and event space, while creating memorable, iconic spaces.

The building is planned to be LEED Gold and WELL Silver certified.
