South Dakota Mines, Mineral Industries Building

Initially slated to be a renovation, the South Dakota School of Mines Mineral Industries Building will be a new, standalone facility that houses the school’s Mineral Industry program, which includes the Departments of Mining Engineering and Management, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, and Geology and Geological Engineering. The goal of the project is to enhance the educational, design, and research collaboration between academic departments and the mining industry.

The facility will feature several laboratories and learning spaces that allow for the measurement and categorization of samples, materials development, and other applications. The layout is designed to allow for visibility into the laboratories to showcase the work being done by students and researchers. Examples of laboratory spaces and equipment include:

  • Petrophysics Lab
  • Sieve Lab
  • Furnace Teaching Lab
  • High Temperature Lab
  • Hydro Metallurgy Teaching Lab
  • Mechanical Testing Teaching Lab
  • Metallography Teaching Lab
  • Micro CT Lab
  • Mineral Processing Teaching Lab
  • Specimen Prep Teaching Lab
